BSAO & BECOR Joint Webinar – From Roof Collapse to Remediation: Understanding RAAC in Ontario’s Buildings

The use of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) has been a contentious topic in Ontario since late 2023 when the Ministry of Education issued a memorandum requesting all school boards to “implement an investigation, assessment, and management strategy for RAAC within their buildings.” This comes on the heels of a recent failure in the UK involving thecollapse of a flat roof constructed with RAAC. Although many school boards have previously identified this issue and implemented management strategies to address the potential concerns related to RAAC construction, many others (including non-institutional owners) may have been unaware of the potential concerns. This presentation will provide a brief history of RAAC construction in Ontario, including several commonly used products, the primary concerns with RAAC construction, guidance on how to identify RAAC construction in existing buildings, and recommendations on how to manage the repair and replacement of these structures.
